Jonathan Badger
(b. Boston, Mass., ca. 1720; d. Providence, R.I., 31 July 1774), a singing-school teacher, organist, and merchant. He settled in Charleston, South Carolina, before 1748, publishing there the earliest collection of sacred music compiled in the South. He moved to Rhode Island around 1768, and there he joined a Baptist church.

[Collection of the Best Psalm and Hymn Tunes. By Jonathan Badger. Charleston, 1752.] The Charleston South Carolina Gazette, 6 Nov. 1752, carries the following advertisement: Just Published, (neatly engraved on a fine Copper-Plate) a Collection of the best Psalm and Hymn Tunes, to be sold by the Subscriber at his House near Col. Brewton's, and at Mr. Joseph Moody's in Broad-street. As this is the first Collection of the kind ever made in this Province, and all the choicest Tunes are inserted therein, 'tis hoped, all Lovers of Vocal Musick, will be disposed to encourage the Compiler. The Price of the Book is no more than Twenty Shillings. Jonathan Badger.'
