Mission: What we do.
The Vermont Early Music Project acknowledges the long history of strong research focusing on New England tunebooks and early music in general. In fact, we would not be establishing this presence if that were not the case. We act as a node on the web and a facilitator of information. Our mission is to connect the research and resources that already exists, augmenting where useful, and to encourage further research. Additionally, we can think of no better way to honor those past and present contributions to musical knowledge than by promoting the singing of this cultural artifact which is our music..
Our progress has been the result of the developing partnerships. That will continue to be our means of advancing. Partnership is synonymous with community and community is inherent in singing. We will do everything we can to establish that community with as wide reach as we can muster.
The following are areas where we feel we can be of service:
Identify and post scanned copies of tunebooks
Scan tunebooks where digital copies do not seem to exist
host audio and video files on the website
reprint tunebooks, notably those compiled in Vermont.
Generally aid in the consolidation of historical information regarding the return of shape note music to the north at about the time of the 1970s folk revival
sponsor singing events
assist local and state historical societies.
