[v]-xii, 'A Table To find any Hymn by the first line'; p. xii, 'Erratum'; p. [13]-290, 'Hymns'; p. [291]-[318], music; p. [319]-324, 'Index.' 'The Baptist Churches in Boston and its vicinity have long been desirous that a small number of Hymns, suitable to be sung at the administration of Baptism, should be printed. [fn.: The Hymns on Baptism, with some others on the Lord's Supper, &c. may be had separately, at a reduced price, by those who may not want the whole book.] These having been collected by the assistance of several members of those churches, the publishers thought it probable that a Collection embracing other subjects also, would be more acceptable, and might serve as a supplement to Dr. Watts's Psalms and Hymns. They have therefore selected many in addition to those on baptism. [New par.] It will be immediately seen, that it is not the object of this publication to supersede the use of Dr. Watts's Psalms and Hymns; nor have the compilers the vanity to believe it will. They feel a pleasure in saying, that in their opinion his book is more useful More than a century has than any other which they have seen of the same nature elapsed since the publication of his Hymns, during which the great Head of the Church has bestowed a portion of his edifying gift in sacred poetry on many others.... [New par.] The insertion of tunes at the close of the book may have an influence to prevent the use of some, which are not sufficiently solemn for the purposes of devotion. Music is therefore presented, adapted to most of the metres in the book. [New par.] The compilers present their thanks to those Christian friends who have assisted in this Collection, either by furnish-ing original hymns, or by loaning books from which they have extracted.'
