The engraving, if it is that, is somewhat cruder in appearance, with less straightness of line and decisiveness of hand than the copperplate or pewter engraving of other items in this bibliography. Perhaps the work was done by another process (engraved on woodblocks or done by relief cut), and the text was added in a second impression.

'Er bedarf wohl kaum eines Beweises, dass ein schöner nach den Regeln der Kunst abgesungener Gesang nicht nur die Gefühle der Seele veredelt; sondern auch ungemein viel zur Erhöhung der Andacht beym Gottesdienst beyträgt. Unsere Zeitgenossen scheinen dies zu fühlen, wie die hin und wieder angelegten Singschulen beweisen. Freylich sind diese Singschulen nicht so blühend, als Liebhaber des Gesangs wünschen. Und woran liegt dies? Etwa an Lust und Eifer? O diesen Vorwurf mag ich meinen Mitbürgern nicht machen, und er kan ihnen auch mit Recht nicht gemacht werden, die wahre Ursach, weshalb unsere Singschulen nach so weit den Europäischen nachstehen, liegt an den Hindermissen, die bisher der Verbreitung guter Gesange entgegen standen. Jeder Liebhaber des Gesangs weiss, dass die zu diesem Zweck dienlichen Notenbücher bisher geschrieben werden mussten, und wie wenige haben dazu Lust und Geschicklichkeit, und finden sich auch einer oder mehrere, die beides besitzen; so ist die Arbeit selbst doch so mühsam, dass die Sänger nur gar zu oft sich genöthiget sahen, acht, vierzehn, und mehrere Tage sich mit alten Gesängen zu behelfen, che ihnen einer oder mehrere neue Gesänge geliefert werden konnten. Kein Wunder, dass dadurch der Eifer vieler erkaltete. Der Durst nach neuem, oder welches eben das sagt, die Begierde mehreres zu wissen, liegt tief in der menschlichen Natur, wird diese Begierde nicht be-friediget, dann stirbt Lust, Fleiss, und Eifer, und so bleiben die besten Anstalten unvollkom-men. Dieses Hinderniss sucht der Herausgeber dieser Sammlung auserlesener geistlicher Lieder zu heben. Wird er Aufmunterung finden; so ist er entschlossen, künstig in gleichen Bänden Fortsetzungen zu liefern, bis dis Werk diejenige Vollkommenheit erreicht, die den besten Deutschen Werken dieser Art nahe kommt.' [It certainly goes without saying that a beautiful song, sung in accordance with the rules of art, not only ennobles the feelings of the soul, but also contributes an enormous amount to the intensification of devotion during the service. Our contemporaries seem to sense this, as is proved by the singing schools which are now and then established. To be sure, these singing schools do not flourish to the degree that song fanciers might wish. And what is the reason for this? Is it a lack of interest and energy? Oh, I cannot reproach my fellow citizens thus, and such a reproach cannot justly be made. The true reason why our singing schools are still so far behind those in Europe may be found in the obstacles that up to now have hindered the dissemination of good songs. Every admirer of song knows that to this end serviceable tunebooks had to be written, and how few have the inclination and skill for that. And if one or more happens to possess both of these qualities, then the work itself is so tiresome that the singers often had to make do with old songs for eight, fourteen, or more days before they could receive one or several new songs. No wonder that the zealousness of many grows cold. The thirst for the new, or to put it another way, the desire to know much, lies deep in human nature; if this desire is not met, then inclination, industry, and eagerness die, and thus the best intentions remain unfulfilled. The publisher of this collection of selected sacred songs seeks to remove this obstacle. If the response is favorable, then he is determined to continue publishing similar volumes in the future until the work reaches that degree of perfection which approaches the best German works of this type.] (Extract from Vorbericht, signed C.L.B.
