'Hiermit erscheint nun das Neue, unpartheyische Gesangbuch zum erstenmal in diesem Welttheile. Nicht in der Absicht etwas Neues vor die Ohren der Menschen zu bringen, auch nicht um andere Bücher zu verachten; sondern unser Wille war, schöne, erbauliche und geistreiche Lieder aus verschiedenen Gesangbüchern zusammen zu ziehen, um ein unpartheyisches Buch oder Lieder-Sammlung allen Liebhabern und Verehrern des gütigen Jehovah's in die Hände zu liefern. . . [New par.] Im Nachdenken über uns selbst, und über unsere Menonisten Gemeinen, unter welchen wir stehen, finden wir wohl Ursache, Klaglieder zu singen mit jenem alten Volk Israel, da die Mauren zu Zion zerbrochen und ihr Heiligthum in Staub und Aschen lag, Ps. 137. Die Mauren unserer Gemeine werden auch löchericht, und die Evangelische Ordnung, Math. 18. wird bey vielen wenig geachtet, und die Weltliebe nimmt zu viel Plaz, wodurch Liebe, Frieden, Sanftmuth und Demuth zu Boden fällt; da doch die Liebe das einige Bruderband ist: Dann wo diese fehlt, so sind doch alle Verbindungen nicht gültig vor Gott. [New par.] Es ist zwar wohl die Taufe ein Bund eines guten Gewissens mit Gott, und eine Einverleibung in eine Christliche Gemeine. Wann der Mensch erstlich zur Erkenntnis seiner Sünden kommt, und zur Busse zu Gott und zum Glauben an Jesum Christum; dann hat der Herr befohlen die Glaubigen zu taufen, Marc. 16, 16. Math. 28, 19. Viele von unserer Jugend achten diesen Befehl sehr gering, verachten Gottes Rath wider sich selbst, und lassen sich nicht taufen, Luc. 7, 30. [New par.] Zum Andenken an die Väter und frommen Blutzeugen oder Märtyrer, die ihr Leben williglich als Zeugen der Wahrheit des Worts dargaben, haben wir einige ihrer Lieder mit in dieses Gesangbuch eingerückt; insonderheit eines von Georg Simon, ein sehr erbaulich Lied an die Jugend gerichtet, und das sich anfängt: "Merkt auf ihr Völker alle," und eins von einem jungen Helden und Streiter in Jesu Christo, Algerius genannt, samt vielen andern, worinnen sehr erbauliche Aufmunterungs-Lehren gefunden werden. Weilen diese wahre Streiter und Verehrer des Weltheilandes waren, und zu einer Zeit lebten, wo der Verfolgungs-Geist und Gewissens-Zwang allenthalben herrschte; so haben wir es nicht für unbillig oder undienlich erachtet, auch einige ihrer Lieder beyzubehalten. [New par.] Hier hingegen wohnen wir in einem freyen Land, unter einer Obrigkeit die uns alle Gewissensfreyheit gönnet, -und geniessen einen grossen Segen von Gott, samt vielen Wohlthaten, wofür wir pflichtmässig ihm zu danken schuldig sind. Weiters finden wir uns verpflichtet der Obrigkeit unterthan zu seyn, und Gott für sie zu bitten, und unsern Nächsten und Nebenmenschen, wie auch unsere Feinde zu lieben, und dem "Uebel nicht zu widerstreben, Math. 5." Und gedenken also bey allen unsern Grundsätzen zu verbleiben, zu leben und zu sterben; dann der Grund und das Fundament ist gelegt, ein jeder sehe nur zu wie er darauf baue.' [Herewith appears for the first time in this part of the world the New Non-Denominational Songbook. It is not our intention to bring something new to the ears of man, nor to belittle other books; it was rather our desire to collect beautiful, edifying and sacred songs from various songbooks in order to put into the hands of all lovers and worshippers of the benevolent Jehovah a non-denominational book or song collection . . .  [New par.] As we think about ourselves and the Mennonite communities in which we live, we surely find cause to sing lamentations with the ancient people Israel, since the walls of Zion are broken and their sanctuary lies in dust and ashes, Ps. 137. The walls of our community are crumbling, and the evangelical order, Math. 18, is ignored by many; the love of the world increases, while love, peace, gentleness, and humility decrease, as love is the sole fraternal bond; for where love is absent, all other bonds are invalid before God. [New par.] Surely baptism is the union of a clear conscience with God and an incorporation into a Christian community, where a man first comes to acknowledge his sins, his repentance to God, and his faith in Jesus Christ. For the Lord commanded that the faithful be baptized, Mark 16, 16, Math. 28, 19. Many of our youth pay little attention to this commandment, despise God's advice against themselves, and do not allow themselves to be baptized, Luke 7, 30. [New par.] In remembrance of the fathers and martyrs, who willingly sacrificed their lives as witnesses to the truth of the Word, we have included a few of their songs in this songbook, especially one by Georg Simon, a very edifying song intended for youth, which begins: "Give heed, ye peoples all . . . ." and one by a young hero and champion of Jesus Christ called Algerius, and many others in which very edifying and encouraging teachings may be found. Because they were true champions and worshippers of the Savior of the world, and because they lived at a time when persecution and forced confession of faith were prevalent everywhere, we have considered it fitting and useful to include a few of their songs also. [New par.] Here, on the other hand, we are living in a free land under a government which allows us all freedom of religion, and we enjoy a great blessing of God in addition to many benefits, so that it is incumbent upon us to owe Him thanks. Further, it is our duty to obey the government and to pray to God on its behalf, and to love our neighbors and fellow citizens as well as our enemies and "to resist not evil," Math. 55. And we must thus be mindful to remain, to live, and to die by all our principles, for the basis and the foundation has been laid, let each one take care that he build upon it.] (Extract from Vorrede.)
