NAHUM MITCHELL


Nahum Mitchell (b. East Bridgewater, Mass., 12 Feb. 1769; d. Plymouth, Mass., 1 Aug. 1853) was a composer, singing master, lawyer, Federalist politician, and judge. He graduated from Harvard in 1789 and practiced law in East Bridgewater. Serving in the Massachusetts legislature (1798-1802; 1809-12; 1813-14) and the U.S. Congress (1803-5), he also held many state offices, including chief justice (1819-21). He wrote the earliest significant article on William Billings, published in Musical Reporter, 1 (July 1841), p. 297-304.
