KERN ALTER UND NEUER, 1752
Kern alter und neuer, dated 1752 on its title-page, is the first German language tunebook printed in America. It is also the earliest known typographical printing of music in the American colonies. The title-page notes a German precursor, which can be identified as Kem alter und neuer (Marburg, 1746). In 1753 Kern alter und neuer was incorporated into Neu-vermehrt-und vollständiges Gesang-Buch (q.v., No. 432). All later editions appear under that title.

NEU-VERMEHRT-UND VOLLSTÄNDIGES GESANG-BUCH & KERN ALTER UND NEUER, 1753-74
In 1753 Christoph Saur (Christopher Sower), the publisher, incorporated Kern alter und neuer, (q.v., No. 431) into Neu-vermehrt-und vollständiges Gesang-Buch. The new work combined the texts and tunes of the Book of Psalms in Lobwasser's translation with the already large hymn collection, forming a compendium which, under the title Neu-vermehrt, went through three or perhaps four American editions before the Revolution. On the title-page of Neu-ver-mehrt, Kern alter und neuer is described, indicating that, by 1753, the publisher considered it as part of the larger work, rather than as an independent item. Because there is no evidence that later issues of Kern alter und neuer appeared separately, they are described here as part of Neu-vermehrt.

[New par.] Die Gesangbücher welche wir bisher gebraucht, sind in unserm Deutschen Vatterland ganz abgeschafft, und diejenige welche zu uns gebracht werden, sind meistens wegen dem schlechten Papier und undeutlichem Druck nicht wohl zu gebrauchen. Man hat daher vor nöthig erachtet dafür zu sorgen, dass auch unsere Gemeinen in diesem Lande, mit einem vollständigen und nach den Bedürfnüssen der Umstände eingerichteten Gesangbuch versehen würden, damit dieselbe sich mit desto mehr Gleichförmigkeit in dem Lob und der Anbätung Gottes unseres Heilandes vereinigen könnten. [New par.] Man hat die unsern Gesangbüchern gewöhnliche Eintheilung beybehalten; die Psalmen machen demnach den ersten Haupttheil desselben aus. Um dieselbe aber desto mehr gebrauchen zu können, und die Erbauung dadurch zu befördern, sind einige Veränderungen nöthig befunden worden. In Lobwassers Uebersetzung sind manche Psalmen mit unverständlichen Ausdrücken verdunkelt, dass man den Sinn kaum errathen kann; manche haben schwere Melodien, dass sie nie in den Kirchen gesungen werden. Es sind daher die besten und bekanntesten, nach deren Melodien Lieder gesungen werden, aus dem Lobwasser genommen worden; die übrigen sinds Theils aus Jacob Sprengs Uebersetzung, welche auch eben dieselbe Melodien haben, theils sind sie aus dem neuen Herborner Gesangbuch, welche nach den Melodien bekannter Lieder gesungen werden. [New par.] Eine Sammlung alter und neuer geistreicher Lieder macht den andern Theil dieses Buchs aus. Man ist bey ihrer Auswahl dem Beyspiel unserer gottseligen Vorfahren gefolget. Der grosse Erzhirte Jesus Christus hat von Zeit zu zeit, und vornemlich seit der Reformation Männer erwecket und mit seinem Geist gesalbet, welche nach der Vermahnung des Apostels Paulus Colosser 3, v. 16. Psalmen und Lobgesänge und geistliche liebliche Lieder zur Lehre und Ermahnung gedichtet haben. Aus denselben hat man diejenige gesammelt, welche man vor dienlich achtete, sie in der Gemeine Jesu Christi sowohl zu seinem Preis, als zur Erweckung und Aufmunterung in der Gottseligkeit anzuwenden. Diesem würdigen Beyspiel gemäs, sind die erbaulichste und bekannteste Lieder aus dem Marburger und Pfälzer Gesangbuch genommen, welche von Joachim Neander, Friederich Adolph Lampe, Caspar Zollikoffer, und andern gottseligen Männern unter den Protestanten sind verfasset worden. Zu diesen hat man eine Anzahl erbaulicher Gesänge, aus denen in verschiedenen Gegenden Deutschlands neu eingeführten Gesangbüchern gefüget. Die Melo-dien sind durchgehends nach dem Pfälzer Gesangbuch eingerichtet.' [The new song book, which the honorable Synod has decided to print for the use of our Evangelical Reformed Congregations in this country, is now a reality. It will be useful to discuss briefly the causes which led to its publication, as well as its order and arrangement. (New par.) The song books we have used up to now have been completely abolished in our German fatherland, and those which are brought to us usually cannot be used because of the poor paper and the unclear print. It was therefore thought necessary that our congregations be supplied with a complete song book, one that would meet the demands of all situations, so that they might be able to unite all the more uniformly in praising and worshipping God our Savior. (New par.) The divisions usually found in our song books have been maintained; accordingly the Psalms represent the first main section. But in order to be able to use this section more and thereby to increase its edifying effect, a few changes were found to be necessary. Some of the psalms in Lobwasser's translation are obscured by incomprehensible expressions, so that one can hardly guess the meaning; others have such difficult melodies, that they are never sung in the churches. Therefore only the best and most familiar ones, the melodies of which are familiar songs, have been selected from the Lobwasser translation. The others are in part from Jacob Spreng's translation, which have also the same melodies, and in part from the new Herboner songbook; these are also sung to the melodies of familiar songs. (New par.) The other part of this book is a collection of old and new sacred songs. In selecting these the example of our blessed forefathers was followed. From time to time, and especially since the Reformation, the great Arch-Shepherd, Jesus Christ, inspired men and anointed them with His Spirit, and they, according to the admonition of the Apostle Paul, Colossians 3, 16, composed psalms and hymns of praise and lovely sacred songs as teachings and exhortations. From these we have selected the ones that seemed appropriate for an assembly in the name of Jesus Christ as well as for his praise, as a means to awaken and encourage to piety. In accordance with this worthy example, the most edifying and well-known songs have been taken from the Marburg and Pfälzer (Palatinate) songbook, which was composed by Joachim Neander, Friederich Adolph Lampe, Caspar Zollikoffer, and other pious men among the Protestants.
