EDWARD STAMMERS

Edward Stammers (fl. Philadelphia, ca. 1794-1802; d. Philadelphia, [1802]) was a composer, director of the Philadelphia Uranian Society (1801), and baker. He is mentioned in Philadelphia city directories as early as 1794 ('Edward Stanimers, baker'). His wife is listed in the 1803 directory as the 'widow of Edward, baker.' An influential figure in Philadelphia's sacred musical life around the turn of the century, Stammers was, with William Little, co-holder of the original copyright of Little and Smith's The Easy Instructor granted on 15 June 1798 (see p. 438). His only collection appeared posthumously.
