SUNDRY ANTHEMS, 1788

ASMI 479

[Sundry Anthems. Philadelphia: John M'Culloch, 1788.]

The Philadelphia Federal Gazette, 11 Dec. 1788, carries the following advertisement: 'Just Published, Printed typographically, And to be sold by John M'Culloch, in Third-Street, near Market-Street, Sundry Anthems. Price 18. 2d. (Being part of a proposed Collection.) The Rose of Sharon. I heard a great voice. Song of the Angels: from Luke, chap. ii. They may also be had separately.'

E21484 (no copy on Readex). No copy located.

NOTE: The compositions advertised here are most likely the following: William Billings, Anthem: I am the Rose of Sharon; William Billings, FUNERAL ANTHEM: I heard a great voice; Joseph Stephenson, Anthem: Behold I bring you glad tidings. Evans assigned separate numbers to each, apparently because the advertisement noted their separate availability. (In the order listed, the numbers are: E21436, E21166, and E21467.) There is no sign that Evans ever saw a copy, and none have been located since.
