SUPPLEMENT TO THE COLUMBIAN HARMONIST, 1806
ASMI 480
Supplement to the Columbian Harmonist.
31, [1] p. 13.5 x 23 cm.
[1806.] The Dedham Norfolk Repository of 21 Oct. 1806 carried an advertisement, dated Dedham, 18 Oct. 1806, and signed by Abner Ellis, for a 'Supplement... to go with The Delights of Harmony or Norfolk Compiler. The new Supplement was 32 pages long, and it contained 'an Ode on Science, by Sumner... an Anthem for Thanksgiving,' and 5 'Original' pieces. It is puzzling, however, that the advertisement identified Jenks's The Delights of Harmony as the work it was designed to accompany, for Jenks's collection has 16 p. of 'Additional Music' of its own, with content that does not match Ellis's description (see No. 290). The present entry describes a Supplement that, except for the title, fits the description perfectly. All copies known to exist are bound not with Jenks's work but with Joel Read's pirated 'third' edition of Daniel Read's The Columbian Harmonist, published in Dedham by Herman Mann and bearing a t-p. date of September 1806 (No. 425). Because its authorship remains doubtful, the Supplement is described here under its title rather than any author's name. The advertisement identifies Herman Mann of Dedham as the printer of the Supplement. p. 1, caption title; p. 1-31, music; p. [32], 'Index.'
