THE VILLAGE HARMONY, 1795-1810

No compiler's name appeared on the title-page of any edition of The Village Harmony. However, Henry Ranlet, who published the first six editions, was co-publisher of the seventh, and personally signed the Advertisement to the fifth, surely took an active role in compiling the editions through 1806.

The newspaper advertisement of the first edition quoted below (30 July 1795) indicates that Ranlet received the help of active psalmodists in bringing it out: 'As the . . .  Collection is made by several Gentlemen, who are Teachers of Musick, the publisher flatters himself, that it will be . . .  useful.' The Advertisement to the second edition (1796) explains: 'I have made such a Collection of Psalm Tunes, Anthems, and other Pieces, as are generally approved of for Divine Worship and Amusement,' and is signed 'the Editor.' The next surviving prefatory statement (4th ed., 1798) notes: 'the Editor is again induced to offer a Fourth [ed.] to the Public, suggesting that the anonymous editor had been the same from the start. The fifth edition (1800) carries the only signed Advertisement. It also leaves little doubt that Ranlet, the signer, compiled the work as well. 'The Proprietor of the Village Harmony has taken great pains to improve this Fifth Edition. In some instances he has left out pieces, and compressed others, to insert in their room such Music as is best calculated to please the taste of those who possess the delicate tone and the nicest ear.' The advertisement to the sixth edition (1803) bears out Ranlet's apparent role as compiler. Beginning 'the Proprietor of the Village Harmony has . . .  taken great pains to alter, correct, and improve this edition, it is signed 'the Compiler.' Unless 'the Compiler' refers to some unnamed person distinct from 'the Proprietor,' it appears that compiler, proprietor, and publisher of this edition were one and the same. Ranlet's responsibility for The Village Harmony, however, was nearing its end. The seventh edition bears the imprint Ranlet & Norris, and its Adver-tisement is written in the first person plural and signed 'the Compilers.' Ranlet died on 12 June 1807. Editions that appeared after his death lack explanatory advertisements and hence, apart from their publishers' names, give no hint of who compiled them.

The Village Harmony, 3d ed. [ca. 1797]

PREFATORY NOTE: No complete copy of the third edition has been found. The Library of Congress, however, owns a copy of a purported The Village Harmony, 4th ed. (M2116.V714 case), with several peculiarities:

          1) only the first four leaves-the preliminary leaf and pages [i]-vi, including the title-page-are from the fourth edition; 2) two conflicting indexes are bound at the end; and 3) the copy has been rebound and the preliminary leaf, pages [i]-vi, and the second index, page [200], are encased in clear plastic (Mylar), which suggests that originally they belonged to another copy.

The Village Harmony was a collection that grew larger with each edition. The first index of the DLC copy shows that the music of the original book ended on page 197; that places it between the second edition (p.l., 187, [1] p.) and the fourth (p.l., 201, [1] p.) and provides sufficient reason to accept it as an incomplete copy of the third edition.

The second index remains a puzzle. It covers a volume with music through page 198, which agrees with no extant copy of any edition, although a book constructed from it would be identical with the fourth edition (No. 508) through page 110, and, except for a few pages, identical with the 'third' edition through p. 197. The pagination suggests that it is a variant of the third edition, certainly later than the DLC copy and earlier than the recognized fourth edition. But if it and the pages bound in at the front of the third edition came originally from the same book, this version represents an earlier issue of the fourth edition.

Because the plastic-coated pages seem to have been added to the DLC copy after its period of use was over, that copy is described here without the added pages.

'The Proprietor of the Village Harmony has taken great pains to improve this Fifth Edition. In some instances he has left out pieces, and compressed others, to insert in their room such Music as is best calculated to please the taste of those who possess the delicate tone and the nicest ear. [New par.] It is not an easy matter to please every body. His principal design is to please as many as possible, and leave the others to please themselves. [New par.] The Village Harmony is so well known, and so generally used, that it needs no comment to recommend it to the public. It contains as good an assortment and as rich a variety of Music, as any book in the United States. Its Rules are plain, concise, and easy for beginners. The greater part of the Music, is easy and animating, and will be found to be extremely well calculated for Divine Worship. [New par.] In so great a variety of Music, there can be found a sufficient number of Tunes, of different Metres, which will be pleasing to almost every class of Singers. However, [New par.] It is not uncommon for the best Theoretical as well as Practical Singers to differ in their taste for Music-for which reason I have been induced to insert some tunes merely to please all. But should I miss of my aim, I shall freely. acknowledge I have committed a very common fault. [Signed] Henry Ranlet.' (Advertisement in full.)
